Ensuring the well-being of children is paramount in early years settings. The government’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requires all providers in England to have at least one staff member with a current and full paediatric first aid certificate on the premises whenever children are present.
More first aiders may be needed depending on the number of children, staff, and the layout of the setting. This ensures a qualified first aider can respond quickly to emergencies.
National Wellbeing’s OFSTED approved QA Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) is designed to meet those needs. It’s ideal for:
Early years staff with Level 2 or 3 childcare qualifications who want to meet the EYFS staff-to-child ratio requirements.
Registered childminders and assistants needing a current paediatric first aid certificate.
Anyone caring for children, including parents and grandparents, who want to learn essential first aid skills.
New staff (since June 30th, 2016) with Level 2 or 3 qualifications must complete this or a similar paediatric first aid course within three months of starting work.
This 2-day course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to handle various paediatric emergencies, including:
Assessing emergencies
Responding to unresponsive infants or children
Performing CPR
Dealing with choking
Recognizing and responding to meningitis
Handling head and spinal injuries
Managing anaphylaxis and asthma
By ensuring staff have proper paediatric first aid training, early years providers can create a safer environment for all children.
